Craig County is located in the southwestern part of Virginia and was named for Robert Craig, a nineteenth-century Virginia congressman. The first settlement in the area was known as “Craig’s Camp,” and it is claimed that George Washington visited it in 1756 while on his travels to the west. In 1851, Botetourt, Roanoke, Giles, and Monroe (now West Virginia) counties were divided to create Craig; further additions from neighboring counties were later made.
The historic, mountainous New Castle community is the county seat, and it boasts one of the commonwealth’s antebellum court buildings with a porticoes courthouse erected in 1851.
Craig Healing Springs, a collection of well-preserved early-20th-century resort buildings representative of the architecture of Virginia’s more modest mountain spas, is located within a short drive.
